In December the Resource Center was the scene of a special collaboration. Discovery Collegiate students, taking a writing course with Mr. Brody Morrison, were looking for a meaningful project to complete. Having an audience in mind is considered an appropriate goal for most writing endeavours but that idea takes on new levels when the writers also seek out ideas from the same audience! And that's just what they did!
After hearing from Mr. Morrison, we knew who would most enjoy this experience! So on a regular visit to the library, I sought suggestions from the Grade Ones for a story that had something to do with Christmas. Notes were taken and then sent to the writing class who took some ideas, adapted others or used their own imaginations to write and illustrate four handmade books.
On December 9th, the students arrived, books tucked under their arms, to a room full of anxiously-excited Grade Ones! Each set of authors and illustrators then proceeded to read their story to a small group of students!
The younger students were so impressed to hear their ideas read aloud and equally impressed with the creative presentation of the stories in these hand-crafted books!
The students were also involved in follow-up discussions, and related colouring activities!
As well, the students were asked to represent objects from a particular story on the interactive Smartboard.
Knowing there was a group of young readers eagerly waiting to hear and read the books made the process of developing an interesting and organized story purposeful for the senior students.
Revising and editing made the finished product - a Christmas story - worth doing well!
Likewise for the care that went into illustrating sections of each story. Care had to be given to showing and supporting the words on the pages through the pictures created!
This was a new experience for all of us but certainly one I hope we repeat.
