Our Grade Ones have been able to hear a wide variety of books in their six years ... from parents reading to them at home, from their classroom teachers and here at the library. Their preferences for certain types of books as individuals is beginning to emerge. I have students who want informational books regularly about sharks, bugs and pets. There are others that seek familiar books in series they have heard such as Froggy, Franklin or Junie B.
When asked if there was a favourite author they would recommend, each Grade One class was quick to make their choice!

Mrs. Pilgrim's class picked Eric Carle as their favourite author. They remembered "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" with its pages that had holes in them to show what the caterpillar had eaten! The children added "his artwork is very good"! One student pointed out it was "easy to read his pictures" and that's key to a great book for this age group. And of course, his stories are always "interesting"! "The Tiny Seed" has been recommended to others as students talk about their library books this year.
Mrs. Gray's Grade Ones enjoyed Eric Carle too but went with Robert Munsch as their pick for favourite author. Their comments focussed on the "silly stories" that made them laugh and how they could read some of the words because they knew what was coming! The pictures were "really colourful" and made them want to look at them.
Thank you to the Grade Ones for your help with this post!
As the Library Lady (that's what the younger students often call me) I can say just how well-loved these books are. They have been regularly checked out by readers in many grades! Eric Carle and Robert Munsch have stood the test of time and many little fingers eagerly turning the pages to see and hear what happens next in their wonderful picture books.
