Welcome to a new feature of the Library, or rather the Resource Centre! This website will be used to highlight what is happening in that big yellow room upstairs, including its connections to many other spaces, in and out of our own school. As well, by sharing some of our experiences, I hope you get a larger sense of what we are about as a school!
For myself, working from the Resource Centre combines many of my personal and professional interests. In addition to the wonderful opportunity to share my love of reading with all the children during their scheduled visits to the bookshelves of the Resource Center, and helping them select a book they will enjoy reading or listening to, I also have other responsibilities! Though being a reader myself, I truly enjoy the conversations we have while helping students to find a book that is both interesting and a "good fit". But there's more to being the "librarian" than this!
I get to work collaboratively with our teachers to plan, and carry out activities that make use of my experience as well as the numerous materials we already have in our school. I also aid in locating additional resources that will help teachers flesh out and enhance the curriculum goals they have in mind. Thus, the Resource Center and I will support teaching and learning across the various subject areas, not just focus on guiding readers to love reading!

Additionally, in this day and age it has become clear that our children need to experience technology in its fullest potential in order to have the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will hold them in good stead. The current access to information has meant amazing opportunities for teaching and learning like never imagined. (Consider those hand-held contraptions used on the original Star Trek that allowed communication across a distance; it was science fiction then!)
Webpages, blogs, Twitter, iPad apps, Skype, Edmodo and so much more are part and parcel of the school experience now, here and abroad. Our children are actively connected in, and out of school through the various devices to which they have access.

So I hope to share many of the activities that occur in the Resource Center, and around the school, that support the use of these and many other forms of information and communication technologies. Whether it's with our Smartboard, the school iPads, some laptops, a digital camera or some other device, there are numerous activities planned for the Resource Center that will enhance what is also occurring in your child's classroom.
As well, along with classroom teachers, I will be focussing on developing the "smarts" our children need as they venture out into that digital world. More on that later.
I do hope you enjoy these pages and that they help in connecting home and school just a little more!
